THE WORLD OF TIM BURTON

When starting my initial research into exhibitions and shows that I would find

interesting I found a gallery called THE DESIGN MUSEUM.I was surprised and excited to see that Tim burton would be having an exhibit however this is in October and i wont be able to visit before this module finishes. Despite this I have still done some research as i believe this is a show that would still particularly benefit my practice.

Tim burton has always been someone who has amazed me with their artwork in films such as corpse bride and nightmare before Christmas, but also in the artwork and sketches that I have always found captivating. It is the way that he creates these worlds and fictional narratives that not only resonate with a younger audience but still have some very dark tones to them that a more grown audience are more aware of. I have soaked up a lot of elements and stylistic techniques inspired from this gothic genre of art and character creation. He is quoted as being “A master of the comically grotesque and the endearingly misfit.

Following this initial statement, I have found that that there is an exhibition of Burtons work at “THE DESIGN MUSEUM “In London. Burton is very well known for his cinematic work however this exhibition will be exploring his work as an illustrator, painter, photographer, and author. I am making a point of going to this exhibition as not only am I a big fan, but I believe I will learn a lot about his process and the variety of his experimentation across the plethora of mediums in his catalogue. Another reason is that there is a lot of his work in collaboration with other artists. As this module has the collaborative element, I am curious to see more work towards final collaborative outcomes instead of just the finished result.

The Design Museum is in Kensington High Street next to the Holland Park. The gallery is devoted to contemporary design in every form, from architecture and fashion to graphics, product and industrial design making it a perfect space to explore for a contemporary revisit remake module. In addition to this I intend to investigate the area to find out if there are any other exhibitions that may aid me with this project.

THE ART OF MAKING, AT THE RWA BRISTOL

I found this exhibition advertised when researching galleries in the area and as my mum Claire Sparkes was an academy nominee at the RWA so have been before. I was initially looking at a different exhibition called “These Mad Hybrids: John Hoyland and Contemporary Sculpture. “However similarly to the Tim Burton exhibition this isn’t on until the 3rd of February. Despite this I was still intrigued as the description of the exhibition interested me as is a showcase of MA students’ different pieces of work and thought this would be inspiring for my own practice and “Art of Making”

What kind of artwork does the venue promote?

The RWA intend to always exhibit leading contemporary artists, and this includes a collective of their own academicians as a society. Despite its focus on ensuring the support and progression of new contemporary works they also exhibit old pieces that have normally only just been bought to the city and the region.

Who is the intended audience?

Similarly, to a vast range of other galleries their goal and is to encourage and make the space accessible to everybody this is ranging from the artist to the general public. They host many workshops and events to encourage this connection with the community and make the statement that they want to “inspires and enriches the lives of all people from all communities and all backgrounds through Art and Creativity. “I think another key thing to add is that they allow free entry to students and young children making great foundations and inspiration for the next and future generations of creatives.

What is the submission/ selling and commissioning procedures?

In terms of shows and submissions there is an Annual open exhibition this is a submission process that you make a payment for and then fill out a form online. Once this process is successful you are then to take the work to gallery. In addition to the annual show there is also a friend of the RWA scheme that also have a show.

How is the work selected? Who curates the exhibition / space? How is the exhibition / space promoted?

When selecting work, it is the president of the RWA, council members and maybe other new members that may sit in that will decide on the curation. However, the President will have the overall final decision on what hangs. Following this there will be an exhibition officer who will work with hanging team to hang the work.

I especially want to see these two pieces in the flesh as numbered (1) Efrat Merin’s, “Turn Back time.” and (2) Holly Sezers “My Greatest Friend. “These are just a couple of the sneak peaks as featured on the website.

This is an exhibition I am interested to visit as is a showcase supporting graduating young artists. And giving them a spotlight for there early career experience and work. This exhibition is at the Camden Art Centre and is exciting as it has been twenty years since the last “New Contemporaries “show. This show will host 55 of the UK’s most prominent and exciting artists emerging from the UK art programs. These artists have been selected by the internationally renowned artists Helen Cammock, Sunil Gupta, and Heather Philipson. I am ready to look at what new contemporary styles are emerging that are relevant to our culture as British young artists and witness how this how has been put together.

Saatchi Arts, Rising Stars Of 2019

Whilst looking into exhibitions that exhibit work that I am interested in I found myself drawn to a particular show of work from 2019.This was the Saatchi Arts, Rising Stars Of 2019.Saatchi is the worlds leading online gallery and I thought it made sense to experience this show as an online walkthrough, it would also give me a feel of the atmosphere of when the public are looking around in the video to. Saatchi Art is dedicated to representing emerging artists from around the globe. These may be seasoned professionals to many others who are emerging artists just starting they’re careers.

This show was curated by Rebecca Wilson, chief curator, Associate curator Monty Preston, and assistant curator Aurora Garrison. In this show their aim was to introduce recent graduates work from the United Kingdom and the states from the top schools and programs, to give collectors a chance to discover this contemporary talent. Among this variety of work, I have found myself drawn to talented artists such as MAÏA RÉGIS. She studied at the royal college of art in London. Her works respond to the emotional and physical binaries of life. They are an exciting person to talk about as I previously spoke about the Bloomberg New Contemporaries, she won prizes from them in 2017 and 2018.I like her work a lot as she likes to work in a collage like style with the aim to find a balance in paradoxical contexts with a sense of humour and joy while leaving space for ambiguity.”
